After hiking Fitzroy at El Chalten we stopped briefly at El Calafate again and flew the next day to Ushuaia. Mandy had "accidentally" booked us on business class so we enjoyed free drinks in the executive lounge and plenty of champagne on the plane. Wish the flight had been longer than an hour it was so nice.. and only 50pesos more each (about 10pounds). Ushuaia is the most Southerly city in the world and so unsurprisingly it was the coldest weather yet on our trip.. we had snow the day after we arrived. The city is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and next to the Beagle channel so there were lots of boats to watch. If you continue South from here you head for Antarctica but we were cold enough and starting to miss the sunshine! We spent a lovely day in the National Park outside the city and then took another flight 3,000km North to the capital Buenos Aires. B.A. is a really modern and sophisticated city and yet still has its Latin influence with people doing the tango in the streets. We spent a couple of days here and saw the Casa Rosada (pink house) where Evita used to emerge on the balcony before she transformed into Madonna in the film. We then endured a 20hr bus journey North to Puerto Iguazu where we saw the largest group of waterfalls in South America - 275 waterfalls with the water plunging 80feet, an amazing sight. We also went on a speedboat ride through the Devils Canyon which is where the majority of the water falls into the river below. The pilot took great delight in sailing through a couple of the waterfalls and drenching everyone.. it was really hot and sunny here though so the shower was refreshing. Continuing our mad dash North we crossed the border into Brazil and took another endless bus journey.. 23hrs up to Rio de Janiero, Brazil. After all these long journeys lately we are looking forward to a week on the beach!!
