We set off for Halong Bay with our group of 55 people at 7am on the Friday. It took 4 hours to get to the bay from Hanoi. When we arrived it was cloudy and a bit underwhelming to be honest.

We boarded a small boat in the foggy bay and we were taken to our ship 'The Jolly Roger'. It was a really cool ship, very wooden and rustic looking! It had three floors, the bottom for sleeping, the middle for eating and the top for drinking and sunbathing!

We sailed out for two hours whilst we were eating our lunch. The food was phenomenal! It was served per table. We had 6 people per table and the food would be ready for us when we got there. The was about 7 dishes on the table for everyone to help themselves to. We had Langoustines, beef noodles, potatoes, crispy chicken, calamari, salad, veg..loads!

After our introduction to the food, we got our rooms. Me and Tom got a double cabin and Neil shared a Twin with a random Spaniard! He seemed nice though! We went up to the top deck and had some drinks. Then people jumped off the boat into the water! Tom was one of the first! The water was really warm and inviting as the sun was now shining and the islands looked like the best thing we had ever seen. Really just amazing. We then went kayaking and caving for a couple of hours around the islands. It was beautiful and the sun set just as we arrived back to the boat for a shower and another feast at dinner. The night ended very lately after many hours of drinking games and watching the stars on the boat.

On Day 2 we were (painfully) awaken at 7am for breakfast. We then set sail again for our own private island. It was a further two hours away through a maze of other islands. We arrived at 'Castaway Island' at around 9:30am and we were pretty blown away. The sun was shining, we had a great beach hut under the stars and we couldn't wait to get into the water! We basically just stayed in the water all day long until it was time to get out and eat or until it was time to do another activity. Tom and Neil went rock climbing and tubing whilst I just read on the beach. There were about 30 of us on the island and everybody was friendly. We didn't want to leave that beach ever. Although the toilet facilities were a bit of a battle! We all got showered and had dinner, another great feast. We then had some beers and were pretty entertained by the antics of our fellow travellers. At around 12am we decided to all go swimming and see what all the fuss about the bioluminescent plankton was. We once again were not disappointed! We swam out to a wooden floating pier and it was just the craziest thing ever seen. The plankton was like glittery, green sparkles which light up when they are disturbed. I can't even describe how amazing it was. It just was. It even sticks to you so when you get out of the water you are covered in glitter!

We showered and went to bed after another late night and then set sail again in the morning back to Hanoi. We arrived in Hanoi and I had lost my purse and my cards. It was a bad way to end the day. We also only had one hour rest and then we got on our 14 hour, 550km bus journey to Hue in Vietnam, south of Hanoi. Lovely lovely lovely Halong Bay.xxxxxxxxxx
