Unawatuna is a small seaside village on the south west coast of Sri Lanka. It has a lovely sandy beach, fringed by palm trees and beach cafe's. It was very backpackery but provided a welcome break after my more intense experience in Galle.

I was fortunate to have a whole cabanna (beach bungalow) for a very reasonable price. The guesthouse owner has rebuilt some of his property, but is still trying to finance the rebuilding of his family home. He told me how he lost close family members, just metres from where I was standing.
I would entreat everyone who reads this to come to Sri Lanka and spend money at small businesses along the coast, it's still a great place to visit. Many places are re-built or re-building and need the tourists to return.
Unfortunately it was unusually rainy while I was there, so no sunbathing. I was determined to swim despite the rain and the sea was really warm.
During the day I chose some sari fabric and had a new top made. The mother and daughters who run the business had all their fabrics and home washed away in the tsunami, but are back in business again and repairing the walls of their home. It was great fun choosing the colours and I was really impressed with the way she cut the fabric to account for the patterns.
My friend came to join me on the second day and I went to my first beach party! The music wasn't quite the calibre I'm used to (an opening for Positive Sounds here I think!).

I was starting to get nervous about my imminent departure to India. On Sunday 15 Jan I travelled back to Galle and from there by train to Colombo.
As always, it was an entertaining (though not entirely comfortable)journey. The train was full and there were no seats. I stored my backpack and spend the journey in the open doorway, where I had a good view and could occasionally sit down.

In the afternoon I met up with a girl I met when I first travelled to Wasgamuwa. She is living in Sri Lanka with her boyfriend. We went to the wonderful Barefoot shop in Bambalapitya and then back to her flat, where I was treated to views of Colombo city from the roof top.
