I decided to postpone my flight to India until Monday to allow me a few beach days before hitting Delhi.
I travelled from Tissa (via Matara to change my flight) to Galle. As we drove along the coast we saw evidence of tsunami damage. Although many of the businesses are re-built or re-building and new homes are going up, there are still people living in tents and temporary accomodation.
Galle is an old Dutch colonial town on the coast. I headed for a guest house in the old fort area, but as these few days have been religious holidays (haj and also a poya day), much of the budget accomodation has been booked up by locals. I was directed to a stay in a Sri Lankan home nearby. I had a warm welcome and it was interesting to meet Tamil speaking Muslims as the people I've been working with were all Sinhalese Buddhists. I was treated to home cooking including wattalappam (a type of pudding) and a very nice home made pickle.
