One of the previous teaching volunteers came back to visit Wasgamuwa with her parents. It was lovely to swap our experiences of village life and share our frustration at the role of women in Sri Lankan communities.
On Friday 23 December I travelled back with her to Kandy. In the evening we ate at Helga's Folly, which must be one of Sri Lanka's most unusual hotels.
It is the former home of Sri Lankan independance hero, George E. de Silva. The colonial style building is stuffed with curious paintings, photos, sculptures and asian artifacts. The walls are covered in bizarre murals and each room is a different colour and theme. Christmas has to have been the best time to visit since the whole thing was also festooned with fairy lights and baubles.
