I caught the ferry across the harbour to Manly to stay in my first australian backpackers hostel. Lesson no. 1, phone in advance to make sure that they've got beds available and most importantly that the hostel still exisits! I arrived after 5.30 and by the time I'd walked to the first 3 hostels listed and found that they had all closed down it was after 7pm and other places were getting full. I eventually found a hostel with a bed in a mixed dorm, despite my fears everyone was very considerate about not putting the light on and went to bed early as they all had work the next day.

After a less than perfect nights sleep I eased myself into the day by lying on a park bench and saw my first kookaburra!

I spent the rest of the day at Taronga zoo drawing the animals.

The next backpackers that I stayed in was in Newtown and was really homely and friendly and despite staying in a dorm room I slept really well and could have stayed longer!

Harriet & I went on a sculpture trail which runs along the coast from Bondi. Some of the sculptures were fantastic and many had beachy or environmental themes.
We swam in an ocean bath (sea pool) see pic, it was lovely.

Hello
Hi darling, lovely reading about your travels! I was in Bondi and Manly last year and thought they were lovely, though I don't think I'd know a kuookaburra if it sat on my head. It must be gorgeous summertime there, but from what I remember, the beaches can be a little rough for swimming, especially bondi.
The shared dorm experience! Snorers! Smelly feet! It is worth paying the extra now and then to get a single room and spoil yourself. I hope you get this message. I am a bit foxed by the technology of this thing....
