Where I stayed
28 hours after waving goodbye to Mum through the smoky glass of the National Express, I arrived in Johannesburg. I was exhausted and really relieved when the airport pickup finally turned up. We drove through the dark affluent suburbs, all gated homes and malls.
Next morning (well midday!), I drew back the curtains to a beautiful view of the city. Johannesburg is surprisingly green, there are trees everywhere that were originally planted to provide struts for the gold mines.
I could hear all kinds of strange bird calls and shiny skinks were sunbathing on rocks in the garden.
I walked to the local mall in the afternoon and planned a quiet night in to read more about South Africa's history.
It all went to pot when one of the hostel owners told me they had free food and booze at the bar that night as it was the biirthday of one of the employees: it was the food i was interested in as i they didnùt do evening food at the hostel and i didnùt want to go out on my own in the dark.
belgian teachers from the congo
It started with champagne; but then it was shots: a few springboks and something bad thqt they called a soweto toilet later something brown on something green and it was time to call it a night
The next morning i was up early for a tour of Soweto and after
