Even I was aware of the rainy season here in Ecuador and as always it pours overnight, clears up around breakfast time and should be brilliant sunshine from about ten through to bedtime. Of course the pathways are slippery until they dryout around 11 but over the past 10 days the rain has continued to nearer midday. Is this the "el nino" effect, global warming or just sods law?

Whatever the cause the result is the same in Canoa. This fishing village that was a paradise a couple of years ago when we lazed under our sunshade on the beach sipping the odd drink between long spells in the warm sea before returning to hammocks or dinner tables where fellow travellers would pass the evening in interesting discusions regretfully doesn't happen.  Part of the reason for this is the invasive music, if you can call it that, which is jacked up to ridiculous levels making conversation impossible. The north end of the beach is now filled with bars, eating places and "touristy" shops which if you do want to enter you have to pass the drop-outs, hippies and peddlars of plastic bracelets, earings and necklesses that they proudly claim the obviously emminent fact that they are hand made.

We always say that we don't revisit any place which we found to be outstanding on  ourfirst visit; this time because Canoa was so untouched by tourism and was merely a small fishing village where the broad sandy beach was an unspoilt surfers paradise. The only thing that hasn't changed is the welcome we received from the fishing families with their multitude of happy playful children who actually understand my clowning.

I have to hold my hand up and admit this time I got it wrong,-- - - - -,just a minute the clouds are breaking up,- - - - it is getting warmer again , about 24/25 degrees now, - - - maybe I'll try the beach again, well after a quick refreshment!

In fact we are going to take a break and explore some of the hinterland next week. Among the places we have ticked off as "interesting" is a valley in the south Ecuadorian foothills of the Andes where the inhabitants reportedly live to a grand age of between 100 and 150 years old. The main reason is so that I may feel young among all those oldies.

In the meantime you too remember not to waste your time doing things which are not really warented, enjoy whatever you do be it for the reward of satisfaction or the great pleasure of giving time and love to someone near you ; Or someone you don't even know.
Take care of yourselves,  Peter T.  xxx
