Being a peninsula, the Coromandel region has a lot of coastline. That meant that even if we were driving away from the coast, we soon found ourselves at ANOTHER stretch of beach.

Now we've BEEN to Hahei before, but the last time we had rather gloomy and rainy weather. We enjoyed it last time, but we realised the area had a lot more potential... so a re-visit was in order.

Upon arriving in Hahei we made a quick trip to the grocery store for some essentials and on the way back to our cabin we decided to go via the beach as the weather was rather nice. While walking on the beach we found the breeze and the overall temperature very agreeable and soon enough Martijn ended up splashing around in the surf. (And again discovering that the ocean is a VERY salty place... YEGH!!!)

When we eventually returned to our cabin we gave our experience on the beach some thought and quickly went back to the store to buy some beach essentials... (Guess who didn't bring a bathingsuit... Indeed!!!) As a result we ended up spending a good portion of the evening splashing around in the surf :)
(And before anyone asks, we didn't bring the cameras to the beach for safety reasons, so there are no pictures of our pudgy white selves in the ocean :P)

The following day we decided to take advantage of the nice weather and re-visit Cathedral Cove. Last time we went there the grey weather meant that it didn't live up to its reputation, so it was only fair to give it another chance.

The trek to the Cathedral Cove beach was a lot more gruelling this time due to the warm weather. (Why couldn't we just have a cool breeze and a light drizzle while walking to the beach and then perfect sun and clear skies while there... And then that same breeze and drizzle for the trek back? Surely that should be possible!)

Upon arriving at Cathedral Cove, we got a little bit of a surprise... The tunnel that connects the two beaches was blocked off. A while ago some rocks broke loose from the ceiling and it was decided that it would be safer to block the tunnel to avoid some innocent tourist getting a 700kg boulder on their head.

Most people were still crossing the tunnel though and SOMEHOW we found ourselves on the other side too... This is only possible in three ways... Either we found/acquired/stole a boat and sailed around the cliffs... Or we swam around the cliffs (with our cameras and a packed lunch in tow)... OR we disobeyed the signs and walked through the tunnel anyway just like everyone else was doing :P - Answers on a postcard please.

After safely returning to our cabin, we collapsed onto the bed and spent the rest of the evening lounging and ... zzzzz...

Glad to see NZ is turning on some of the splendid summery weather that its famous for :) tho as you say - it would be preferable if the hottest bits were JUST as you found a nice spot to play in the surf :) I expect to see some decent suntans when I get to Wellywood !
