Boy this was an exhausting day...

We went to the Auckland Zoo for something unusual. They do behind the scenes tours where you can get up close and personal with the various animals. We had booked a ZOOM tour (as it is called) to get cuddly with the resident Galapagos Tortoises...
Why Galapagos Tortoises you ask? We don't really know, but when looked through the list of available tours, we both (seperate from each other) picked that particular tour as our favourite... We guess we just like slow moving animals, as we can relate to them rather wwwweeeeeelllllll...

The three of us met up with our tour guide and walked to the Galapagos Tortoise enclosure where one of the tortoise-keepers was waiting for us with a bag of BIG and LONG carrots (we will explain why soon :P). There we were let into the enclosure and had to hunch down a little so as not to startle these behemoths (nobody likes someone 5 times their height looming over them ;)). The keeper told us a lot of interesting things about the tortoises while we were given carrots to feed them and be real close to them. The carrots had to be quite long because the tortoises can actually take BIG bites and we wanted to keep all our fingers :D. Their beaks are like parrot beaks and can close with enough force to snap most things in half... EEK!

We also got to pet them gently and had a little look inside the building where they often sleep. While petting the tortoises we noticed that they can feel an aweful lot through their shells as it would startle them. They would rise up a little and stretch their necks to check our what was going on behind them :).

After this tour, which actually took almost 2 hours as opposed to the 1 hour the website and brochure claimed (but we're not complaining!), we spent the remainder of the day exploring and enjoying the Auckland Zoo.

As can be seen in the pictures there are a LOT of animals there in the zoo and many are just too adorable to walk past. Despite all the exotic animals on display one of the cutest things we saw were some baby chickens with their mother just in the middle of the pathway. They seemed to be working out the pecking order and we think the black one might be slightly dominant ;) (OR very very hungry!).

With all the animals available to enjoy and admire we ended up spending a good 4 hours in the zoo without even counting the 2 hours of the tour. We slept REALLY well that evening :D

Dit is echt mooi, dat je schildpadden kan voeren, ze lijken de wortels echt lekker te vinden. Waar is die olifant van gemaakt waar jullie onder staan ?
