The past couple days at Zion started out cloudy with a few showers and Saturday turned to rain for several hours. We had planned to leave Monday to go to CA to visit Wayne's brother Darold but decided we might as well leave early due to the weather conditions. Our other camper spot was available so we moved over to the next loop and packed our bags.
It was early afternoon when we said farewell to the Quinn's and started driving. We will plan to catch up with them and the Denny's next week in eastern Utah where they will show us around some of the other national parks and interesting sites. We drove in rain for at least the first hour so the system seemed to be socked in between the mountain ranges in the area.
The drive was all interstate so we made good time. The GPS took us off for an unusual loop in Las Vegas which was a bit confusing but we got back on track and drove until early evening. The drive through central CA was quite interesting in the same way we had found the Yuma area. There are miles and miles of orchards and vegetable fields. There was some activity but it seemed like spring was just arriving there also. Again, we realized how much of the country's fresh produce must come from these concentrated areas. When we got closer to the area south of San Jose there were areas where we could smell garlic and saw it in the fields. There were also some produce stands so we stopped and got a bag of fresh almonds, some trail mix and a few other treats. Most of the smaller ones were closed but I'm sure are open during the seasons when they have fresh products to sell.
We stayed in Bakersfield the first night and then checked into a hotel I had found on the internet near the San Francisco airport. It was cheap and close to where Darold lives. We called to let him know that we had arrived and he was in Redwood City with Joan at that time. He called back a short time later and invited us to have dinner with them in downtown San Mateo. We met them there and had a nice dinner and a good visit.
We talked about the time we lived in CA when Wayne was in the Navy. He and Darold had requested brother duty so were both stationed at Moffet Field. Darold and Joan help us get set up in our first unfurnished apartment with some of their extra furniture. They also gave us a bedroom set from her grandparents. We refinished it, used it for our bedroom set for many years and now have it in our spare bedroom. I remember having many meals at their home in Cupertino....they were so hospitable. They also included us in holiday plans with Joan's family during that time since we didn't have other family in the area. Joan had a niece Gina that was a little older than Missy but they played together during those visits.
Wayne was deployed for 6 months to Okinawa during that tour of duty and Missy and I stayed there. I worked at a Computer Service Center and Missy had daycare with Mimi & Papa, an elderly couple that lived nearby and managed an apartment complex. It was nice to have Darold and Joan's moral support. After Wayne returned we still lived there for a few months before being transferred to New Mexico. Kristin was born at the El Camino Hospital in March 1972 during that time. Thanks again, Darold & Joan for your kindness....guess that's what family is all about!
Moffett Field is now a NASA Station with parts of it being used by Reserve and National Guard units. Darold has access since he is retired military so we drove around to see what we remembered from being there. The base housing that we lived in is no longer there but the hangars and work areas are still being used. Darold & Wayne agreed that it's good that NASA is using the base rather than having it idle and empty. We also drove by the chapel that we attended and where Kristin was baptized with Darold and Joan as the sponsors. It was an interesting tour and lots of memories for all of us were made there.
