Basically Vang Vieng is tubing town, for those of you who dont know thats sitting in a large rubber tube, floating down river and stopping at bars, meeting others and drinking all day and for groups of travellers wanting to get wasted and have a good time but stranegly i just wasn't in the mood for it... I met a German girl on the bus over and found a guesthouse with her and went out that night too. Walking through Vang Vieng was bizarre though, its like Magaluf but with loads of Friends, and by Friends i mean friends is on big screen TV's everywhere! And everyone who has been tubing and got pretty smashed just flaked out on chillout sofa's, motionless gawping at every possible edition of Friends, and every bar has it too, though a few had Family Guy, a much better choice, but still it was pretty bizarre.
I was ready for downtime though and guessed i would maybe do one day here and try the tubing but it was really a stop off point to my next destination Luang Prabang, chillout central. It was a 5 hour journey here and then 6 hours to Luang Prabang so seemed sensible to atleats try a day but that night i went out with the German girl and met a few other travellers, most noticeably 2 really loud English girls both pretty hammered, really loud, sun burnt and both recruitment managers from near Essex - we all know the type, a cross between an 18-30 tour rep and the Ab Fab duo... but louder! We also met an Oz girl and tried a late night bar where all these Euro guys were smoking wacky backy and playing table tennis under a single light bulb for light and a ball and table with a mind of their own - they must have been having a great time so while the group i met started drinking games on buckets of vodka i managed to dodge that, have a beer and play crazy ping pong and had a great contest i eventually lost 2-1, every game on tie breakers, to a really stoned but cool guy from somewhere in Europe but after that i really had to crash and decided that a full day of tubing and drinking was probably not for me but i would see next day and decide then as buses set off to Luang Prabang right up until 3pm.
That night i got another 'itchy' bed and had a pretty sleepless night and when i got up it was raining and the sky was very grey so decided i would def give it a miss and try again when i come back to Laos. There are other stuff to do in Vang Vieng though, i mean the landscape is amazing, enclosed in the most beautiful and steep forest clad mountain range and you can kayak and visit limestone caves but it was the area to live and stay in that was the put off so i packed up and booked a ticket for the 2pm bus.
By the way, my camera has finally died so i have no photos but will be getting my iphone in a weeks time so will use that for a camera so photo's will start again from Thailand part 3!
