For those not old enough to remember penpals, I'd like to point out the concept of meeting people and getting to know them initially by the written word is no new thing. Believe it or not, newspapers used to have sections dedicated to those looking for penpals and grade schools would match up penpals in other cities.  Like internet news groups and such, you would look for someone that you shared an interest with.  Like travel or RoadTreks, or both.

So, when I pulled up in Judy’s driveway and tenderly parked my vintage RT next to her very expensive, quite new and shiny one, I felt an instant kinship.  Minutes after ringing her doorbell we were on our way down the street to join others for Super bowl and food.  It’s not quite that different than me inviting strangers from Italy to come enjoy my house for a month.  I basically handed them the keys to my house and car and left town.

After a great superbowl game and lots of ribs, we chatted till bedtime.  I sacked down in my van in her driveway – giving us both personal space.  This morning after a cup or two of coffee I headed off south. Destination: Carpentaria State Beach.

The drive from Lompoc to Santa Barbara takes you through some absolutely picture perfect wine land.  Since we have been the recipient of quite a few storms and a fair amount of sunshine, the hills were that verdant green color and awash with wildflowers.  The only hint that the land gave me that it wasn’t spring was the fact that all of the grape vines were still completely naked – not a tiny leaf in sight.  Just beautiful.
