After exchanging a few email addresses and saying farewell, we left for Sonora, following the same route over Sonora Pass. It was another gorgeous day and we stopped numerous times to enjoy the view and look at potential campsites.
We stayed in the older section of the Days Inn Sonora, which is a historic old building with lots of charm. Had dinner at El Jardin, a great mexican restaurant in town on the main drag.
Besides breaking up the drive we stayed overnight in Sonora so we could visit the Toulumne County Museum and History Center. My Grandmother's family, the Cabezuts, were original Californios and the museum has historically featured displays and information on the Cabezut family. The staff there was very helpful and knew the Cabezut name. They also told us about the 150 year celebration of the first Cinco De Mayo, which will take place in the town of Colombia, Ca, in 2012.
Our last stop on the way home was at The Barn, a produce stand in Escalon which sells locally grown organic produce. No drive through the central valley is complete without bringing home some great fruits and vegetables! That night we had corn with dinner and peaches and blackberries for dessert. A perfect end to a great trip....
