Everyone should see a German Christmas market at least once in their lives. They really are magical. Our favorites are in Stuttgart and Esslingen.
Esslingen gets the vote for best food. We got lunch from the soup man, warm up with one of a dozen warm soups in a real bowl with a flamkuchen (a very thin crust pizza of sorts) for good measure. And we had to share a few baked in the fire, hot cinnamon rolls too. But we did not partake in the wooden hot tubs. Not sure folks bring suits either . . . and they're on display . . . that's one way to warm up at a market.
We went for the best eagle eye-views of Stuttgart from the top floors of the Art Museum and the Rathaus, also good places to warm up and find a free bathroom. This year, we found a really good kokos (giant macaroon, no cookie, just coconut) too.
The best part really, seeing the girls. They love people watching, but even they couldn't resist the lights and sights of Christmas. Pair that with a set of grandparents, and this was a great year for us at the markets.
