Did a tour of the underground tunnels of Naples - there are 400km of tunnels under the city, first constructed by the Greeks and used as water storage for 2000 years. A Roman market and theatre is also now buried underground. The water was drained in the 1880s after a cholera outbreak, then the tunnels were used to dump building materials until WW2 when many tunnels were used as air raid shelters. Only about 1km of the tunnels is now navigable, at times with both shoulders (boys) or hips (girls!) were scraping against both sides as we squeezed down a 100m tunnels holding a candle for light. Great tour, fascinating way to spend a couple of hours in an otherwise hectic city.
As we were walking along the main road back to the train station (in the early afternoon) we saw a local girl have her phone snatched - a bloke ran up to her in the opposite direction, grabbed the phone as she was using it, dragging her onto the road until she let go - she was left with the earphones..
Looking for our first decent pasta meal in Italy (ok, the lasagne entree on Venice Island was pretty good, there just wasn't enough of it), we tried the pasta bar just down the road from the hotel - and were sadly left underwhelmed. The taste was good, but just too salty for our palates, so we left Italy disappointed in the pasta offerings :( Luckily the atmosphere, pizza tasting plate and drinks were fabulous!
Rome to Warsaw 13/12
Early start for the 10am flight to Warsaw.
Got a taxi from the airport to our hotel in the city centre (15km, about $20). Went for a walk to the Old Town, had some snacks and mulled wine at a small Xmas Market (by small I mean 10 stalls, compared to the 50-100 at the German markets), then back to the hotel for a short rest before heading out to a traditional milk bar for soup and pierogi (savoury dumplings) - all good, except the sauerkraut one which didn't go down as well as the others, as a result of our overdosing in Germany.
Did a reccy of the route to the train station ready for tomorrow's journey to Krakow - luckily we did because we had some trouble finding it, and it's a bit further than expected!
Currently 2 degrees ("feels like" temp = -1), heading for a top of 2 again tomorrow. Thermals all round!
