I've been abroad for 200 days now. Had Easter and the subsequent overbooking not occurred, Nelson is where I would have arrived two days earlier. The journey to Nelson from Picton is short and scenic, past many vineyards, twisting around hairpin bends through pine valleys and numerous Scenic Reserves.
Nelson itself is a comforting, artistic full of cafés and tramping shops. To maximise the sunlight buildings are limited to few levels. This reveals the spires of its modest wooden churches and the gothic/deco, semi-open belltower of Christ Church Cathedral.
I'm staying at Tramper's Rest, predominantly for advice on treks. The owner, Allan, does not disappoint, and, within minutes, my place is secure on the four-day Heaphy Track in the north-west.
I wash my hiking clothes in preparation and, not realising they are in a pocket, manage to turn my remaining traveller's cheques to confetti.
