For the final day, we head to Durbar Square, Kathmandu's tourist mecca. The sadhus have their faces painted and orange robes ironed, ready to sell their portraits. There is spit and decades of pigeon shit on this World Heritage Site. It's lived in by rough sleepers and their animals. It's alive. Despite some neglect, restoration is underway in parts.
In contrast, Field Marshall Kaiser Sumsher J.B. Rana's restored Edwardian Garden of Dreams is an oasis behind walls. Couples kanoodle on benches and in its more secretive corners. We lie in the sun in the mats and cushions provided and await our night flight.
