The bus back to Kathmandu. Pastry sellers and taxi drivers linger around the busier hostels and along the route to the tourist bus park. In the rank of more than a dozen coaches, ours looks the second least likely to arrive. Expectations of it leaving on time are low. 15 minutes late is about average. The rear suspension is shot, so everyone moves forward to avoid headbutting the roof as we bash over potholes. The driver parks on a corner to mess with the radio. Thankfully it fails to work. It's helluva bumpy ride but at least this time there are no impromptu strikes to hold us up.
We're dropped off in an unidentifiable location in Kathmandu. KTM is in more turmoil than usual with big queues stretching from petrol stations; only 25% of expected fuel deliveries have turned up in the capital this week. Taxi drivers and hotel pimps lurk by our stop but we insist on walking away. Our instincts are right. We're close to Thamel.
After shrugging off a persistent hotel tout (a desperate guy waving random fliers from his pocket), Nono negotiates a much fairer price than last at the Pilgrim's Guest House. We are tiring of bargaining now, and of the dust and noise. It feels time to go, but first we have the enormous pleasure of dinner at Nar's and the best daal bhaat, pickles and spiced yoghurt in town.
