Ilha Grange is an island off the coast of Brazil, apparently about 3hrs south of Rio. We were able to get a transfer with the hostel we were staying at (Aqua Rio) that took us there. What we didn`t realize was that by using the transfer we were taking our lives into out own hands with the maniac behind the wheel! He was apparently hung over and had to stop the van every now and then to stretch and once to wash his face to wake up! Scary stuff! Anyway, we then took a speed boat out to the island and arrived safe and sound.

The hostel was amazing (see photos) as it was situated on a little point and had its own salt water pool/ aquarium. From the hostel it was about a 15min walk along the beach to get to the main town. The town was great (quite expensive) and had a fantastic array of shops and restaurants.

Our first few days were spent wandering around the island and exploring the beaches. The island used to be a prison island for political prisoners, so there were old prison ruins and an aqueduct to see. There were also amazing beaches to see (when the weather was good).

I had my birthday there and we started the day off with a kayak mission to one of the other bays and parked up on the beach with a beer!! Ideal! Then Liz shouted a gorgeous night out at one of the seafood restaurants. we had some amazing calamari and some of the biggest prawns I've ever seen!! Was lovely.

Unfortunately from about this point the weather turned bad. The last three days there it rained, we had massive cabin fever and eventually ran out of books to read! Walking to the town every night for dinner in the teaming rain was never fun...especially as huge rivers were gouging out great canyons in the sand that we had to try and cross! Although in the rain we did discover an amazing restaurant that served some of the most amazing garlic prawns and some of the best Strog ever! Odd combo, but still great!!

We took the transfer of death home and thankfully arrived back in Rio alive!
