It's raining in New Zealand, but still feels warm so we decided to stay in hostels in the town of KeriKeri in the Bay of Islands for a few days until it gets sunnier for camping. We spent most of yesterday driving up to the Bay of Islands and looking around some of the town. The roads are so quiet and really beautiful so the drive was very pleasant indeed. We stopped over in a hostel that housed a large amount of fruit pickers (mainly from Germany and NZ) and shared a room with a guy who is walking the length of New Zealand and got some great tips for things to see in the South Island. The hostel had two cats so we played with them until going to bed.

Today we woke up and it was still raining so we decided to book a room for two nights in the KeriKeri farm hostel which I have to say is the best we've stayed in so far. Set in the middle of orange orchids the inside is a traditional farm house and the dog Nikka is super cute.We spent the morning in KeriKeri and visited the oldest building in NZ, only 178 years old (so not that old!) set in a beautiful bay with very small houses and a replica Maui tribe. We walked round the small town which had a large amount of chickens and ducks chilling about. I helped save a tiny chick from crossing the road and we went to an area called Mautauri which is home to the best Fish & Chips in NZ. The harbour area was very lovely and we had a good lunch watching the boats. As the weather didn't improve we wanted to see some more by car, so we drove to Taupo Bay another lovely bay looking out to sea. The beach was empty so we walked along the sand looking at the stranded jelly fish type blobs on the shore,

We drove back through the beautiful hills and fields to the hostel. It was raining slightly so we asked if we could take the dog for a walk through the orchids. The farm is organic and has 2 pigs,1 sheep and lots of chickens wandering around. Nikko was a great guide and we got to see the whole farm, throwing sticks for her to fetch. I'm now sat in the middle of the big wooden social area, we've cooking pizzas and relaxing in the lovely hostel tonight. We'll see what happens with the weather tomorrow, but the Bay of Islands seems to be very nice indeed and rain or shine I'm loving exploring the chilled out country of New Zealand.

I want a black labrador and farm house! Claire x
