We spend a little time touring Linz but then head to Mauthausen, a concentration camp, that is 20 minutes away. It is another cold & rainy day, appropriate for the subject matter but we are not dressed for the extended outdoor touring which makes it particularly uncomfortable.
An audioguide is provided which provides details in English on the life of prisoners. The written material, however, is only in German making it more difficult to get the full impact of the presentation.
An estimated 100,000 people were killed here. Auschwitz and Birkenau, near Krakov, were massively larger than this. The presentations of personal effects had also been exceptionally poignant. Never the less, the experience here is very powerful.
As we leave the camp, we walk around an exceptional sculpture presentation. The powerful material is contrasted with a really beautiful and peaceful countryside. We all commiserate with man's behavior to fellow man.
Chilled to the bone, we leave for dinner. We go to a favorite local restaurant of Alex & Richard. It is a country restaurant. Very nice food and a completely local atmosphere.
Alex wants to see a favorite artist at her opening in a local art gallery. She ends up buying 3 pieces to go with one she already owns.
