After our disastrous experience at Yala, the travel agency tried to make amends by giving us an extra night at The Beach House, which was a wonderful place to spend 4 days. The cosy 3 bedroom house had a fabulous garden and pool and a door that opened from the garden onto a picture-postcard tropical beach which we had to ourselves,  except for the fishermen who pulled in their nets morning and afternoon, and the odd herd of water buffalo being driven along the beach.

The staff at The Beach House were super professional and the cook a properly trained chef who produced wonderful lunches and dinners – always healthy fish, salads and Thai-style dishes, which Georgie and I loved after so many heavy India dishes earlier in the trip.  I could eat like that every day.

The weather continued to be mixed for the first couple of days but we had lots of fun playing in the waves (the house had a surf board and boogey boards), and the children became pretty good at Scrabble.

Then the weather broke and the clear blue skies appeared so we went to a different beach, called Mirissa, to make the most of it.  We played in the waves for far too long and caught way too much sun.
