Brad was full of emotion on our last drive in Australia, reminiscing about different "journeys" we have taken during the last few months. We have driven over 15,000 km since we left Sydney in March and have become so adept at driving long distances that we are a bit sad that it is all over. To put it in perspective, it is 15,500 km from London to Cape Town by road. No mean feat with 3 kids.
Our wonderful memories, and relaxing drive listening to chill-out tunes on the i-pod were rudely interrupted by poor Zachy announcing that he was going to be sick. I slammed on the brakes but annoyingly too late, so with only 30 km to go til we reached Darwin (our final destination) we were reduced to stripping our middle child of his clothes on the roadside, and cleaning out the car with baby wipes.
We limped into Darwin and carried Zach straight to bed where he seemed to revel in the attention and requirement to watch back-to-back DVDs. Learning from our Kununurra experience last weekend Jamie, Benjamin and I headed straight to the pharmacy in a bid to avoid hospital visit no. 3.
Frustratingly, we scrapped the babysitter we had booked, and Alex and Andrew very gamely spent the last night of their holiday having take-away Thai food with us in the room. Its been so much fun spending the last 2 weeks with them, and we have hugely appreciated all the help and effort they have put in with the kids. The big boys will miss Andrew's fire-building and boomerang-throwing skills, and Alex's amazing talent for art. Benjamin will be bereft at loosing his new best friend Andrew. And I will of course miss having another girl along for company, not to mention helping me to maintain my sense of humour at times. Thank you guys, its been brilliant, and please come and see us in the UK sometime soon.
Brad and Andrew hit the town for a final few beers, leaving Alex and I chit-chatting on the sofa, and consoling Zach who still didn't feel too great. The beers were obviously good - I found Brad at 5am passed out at the foot of the childrens bed.
Sunday and Monday were spent running around Darwin doing some final errands (sending yet another bag home to mum) and getting ready to fly out to Bali. Zach felt much better so managed to enjoy the fantastic wave pool and paddling pool along with Jamie and Benji. A great way to say goodbye to Australia.
