Cape Leveque was fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Probably one of the best places we have stayed in Australia. The resort is a rustic, low-key place with a mixture of accommodation from campsites, to small log cabins, to beach shacks to safari tents, which we were in. The safari tent was brilliant, perfect for us, and exactly the mix of comfort and 'barefoot' we love. Inside the tent was a small double bed and 2 small singles, plus space for the travelcot. On one side of the tent was a terrace with a bbq, and the other a mini portacabin which housed a toilet, shower, and tiny kitchenette. Within a small area there was plenty of space for us to relax and the kids to potter around.
The beaches in Cape Leveque are huge with, once again, pristine white sand stretching for miles. The western beach is bordered by red cliffs and rocks, and the colour contrast between the sand, sea and cliffs is stunningly beautiful. The eastern beach is calmer and better for swimming so we tended to spent more time there.
Having done so many tours and day trips up the rest of the coast, we really did have a lazy time in Cape Leveque, playing on the beach in the mornings then having lazy afternoons in the tent. One day we all had a long family afternoon nap, which seemed very indulgent but much-needed.
Brad took Jamie and Zach fishing one morning, which Zach in particular really enjoyed. Brad caught a large batfish and a blue striped snapper and Zach a stripy sea perch. They came home with 2 which Brad barbecued on the terrace - tasted fantastic, and a welcome break from the limited menu of salads and sandwiches I usually come up with.
Our evenings were spent planning the Gibb River Road leg in more detail, right down to provisions needed, given the limited space we have in the 4x4.
