3.30am, its dark and raining, the phone goes. The gypo van is ready, could I pick it up! This guy really is weird, but better to get the van back in our hands regardless of the time than do it in the morning and risk further mishap. So off I trot into the darkness and potentially into the hands of a nutter, one who had already threatened me. Katherine needless to say was somewhat concerned as she lay awake thinking the worst!

But to give him his due the van was in full working order, and every electrical fault, problem, niggle  had been fixed, including a wobbly battery holder, a disconnected parking system, some worn wiring and the actual problem – a dodgy isolator – which could have been fixed about 10.30 the previous morning. But – these people live in these places away from everyone else for a reason.

That left our remaining and serious problem still to attend to. Jamie's foot. Given Jamie does not complain, does not say something hurts when it does not and generally can not wait to run around, the fact that he would not put any weight on it was concerning us. Further, the compulsive self diagnosis that everyone has to do these days on the internet had convinced us that one of the small bones in his foot was broken, as one of the numerous websites said that children rarely sprain their muscles or tendons as early in life they tend to be stronger than bones, especially the small ones in the foot.

So off to Carnarvon hospital, 350 km away, at 7am to,  X ray the foot we are now convinced is broken and get it set in a cast for anywhere between 3 and 6 weeks! All those beaches and sand with a 6 year old in a plaster cast, give me a break!

But to our relief it was just a sprain, so with a working van and a 6 year old who would be hobbling for a few days and no more we headed off to Ningaloo, a bunch of much happier campers!
