The main stop over after the Twelve Apostles is the historic little fishing town of Port Fairy. This place gets a lot of hype with 50 historic buildings and a pretty port with numerous nice eateries. I have to say we were a little disappointed, do not get me wrong it was lovely but it does get so much hype we were expecting something akin to one of the small French Ocean port's or Salcombe. Suffice it to say we ended up eating Fish and Chips again. Although there were a couple of very nice restaurants but they would not have taken kindly to our lot pitching up.
We had a great walk around town, an ice cream and stopped off in one of the lovely bookshops where the boys settled down on the floor to read books for almost an hour like good little travellers.
Today we had a big drive from Port Fairy to Robe - approx 4 hours - so we started the day gently with some fun for the kids. Brad played mini golf at the campsite with Jamie and Zach which they loved, and Benjamin had a good long nap in his cot, which he more than deserved after a good few days of napping on the hop.
More bouncing on the jumping pillow then into Port Fairy for a fantastic brunch, one of the best yet. Brad and Jamie had a huge scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. Jamie is now eating comfortably more than me at every meal, not sure where he puts it as he is still as skinny as a rake.
Then back in the campervan and off to Robe. The scenery in South Australia is pretty flat, although the area around Mount Gambier was clearly designated as an area for commercial forestry. We passed several huge timber and wood product plants. Further on into the journey it turned to flat agricultural land.
Having got totally hyped up about Port Fairy by the guide book we arrived in Robe with considerably lower expectations and were pleasantly surprised: its a pretty seaside town, with white sand beaches and calm turquoise sea. The town has some old buildings which are a lovely soft sandstone colour, and some quite up-market little gift shops.
As you may notice - no inspiring photos from us of this place.
We chose a lovely little campsite close to some lakes, parked up and let Zach play his own games in the campervan and Jamie went to the playground. Zach is definately in need of 'space' away from Jamie today and ended up going to bed in the front seat of the campervan in order to get away from Jamie!
We scooted into town for dinner at a great pizza restaurant where Benjamin discovered a taste for garlic bread, and we all vowed it was the best pizza in Australia so far.
Back to bed in the trusty campervan, Zach falling asleep in the front seat looking at the stars and claiming he was seeing comets......bliss.....
......6am start tomorrow to make it to Kangaroo Island ....
