After perusing the internet for fun things to do in East Anglia, and rejecting the idea of visiting a wildflower park on the basis that it is the middle of winter, I then found a page for an Anglo-Saxon village! The village had been excavated in the 1970's and discovered to have been from around 500AD. The buildings had been experimentally reconstructed and there was a museum with all kinds of archeological finds and a hokey DVD making the whole thing sound stunningly exciting and mysterious (which it wasn’t) but leaving the DVD aside, it was a marvelous outing! And I stopped to have tea and a scone at the café, because no outing in England is complete without a nice cup of tea.

There was also a big park around the museum and a river and a lake, and a river hide where I sat and watched the ducks squabbling about on the lake. And supposedly there are otters in the river now as well, but I didn’t see any this day. Such fun!

Following this, I headed to Bury St Edmonds, where there is a cathedral, park and ruins of an old abbey. The cathedral was not very exciting at all, but the park was very pretty and ornate, as Ye Olde English Gardens are, even managing to have flowers in bloom in winter, and some fascinating old stone pillars from the abbey and surrounding buildings. I will attempt to attach some pictures to show you the extent of the ruins.
