The nationalism is something I really can't stand on this trip. There was a world map in the hostel in Prague. Across most of Canada someone scribbled something about how Canadians need to stop pasting flags all over their stuff because after all, "their country hasn't done shit" and they have nothing to be proud of. (I assume that by shit the vandal probably was speaking in military terms.)

A better-informed traveler would know that Canadians have a lot to be proud of, a good culture, safe, laid back, intelligent and generally well-educated people- and they have done "shit" in both World War I and II, if one is into that martial sort of thing.

The reason Canadians wear flags is because they sound like Americans and want to make sure everyone knows they're not. This of course implies a dislike of America. One can dislike foreign policy, but your average American traveller does not decide foreign policy. Basing opinions of people on where they are from is, like any prejudice, the result of small mindedness and a lack of information. Similar banter was written over Poland by Germans, and over Belgium by the French. Someone I would have liked to meet drew a little Island in the middle of the Atlantic and named it "Land of people who hate nationalists" Amen, brutha.
