My first stop today was the Art Institute of Chicago.  It's considered one of the best art museums in the country.  I picked Thursday as the day to visit since it's the only day they're open late.  At one million square feet, it is the second largest art museum in the U.S. (behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York) and I was sure I was going to need every minute of the time available.

The Art Institute has one of the world's most notable collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art but its diverse holdings cover pretty much every period and location.  Some of the highlights of the collection are a Water Lilies painting and Wheatstacks (End of Summer) by Claude Monet, Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, Bedroom in Arles by Vincent Van Gogh, Nighthawks by Edward Hopper and American Gothic by Grant Wood.

As I expected, I was in the museum until closing time.  I then headed for Charlie Trotter's.  While it's considered on of the best restaurants in Chicago, it wasn't my first choice.  I had wanted to go to Schwa.  Unfortunately, of all the great restaurants I wanted to visit on this trip, Schwa is the only place I was unable to get a reservation.  I called and called for weeks but the folks at Schwa aren't known for answering their phone.  By the time someone finally answered there were no seats available.  Since Schwa is known as a difficult place to get a reservation and is also known for cancelling reservations, I had made a reservation at Charlie Trotters, just in case.  That turned out to be wise insurance.

Dinner at Charlie Trotter's was quite good.  I had thought they were more traditional than they turned out to be.  Dessert was particularly good.  Since I was dining by myself and wouldn't be able to try a bite of anyone else's desserts, I was given a sample of each of the six desserts they were serving that evening.  It was a great finish to a great meal.
