I went to the Idaho State Capitol today. It's a Romanesque building modeled after the U.S. Capitol with a large rotunda and two symmetrical wings for the House of Representatives and the Senate. It also houses the Governor's Office. The Supreme Court moved into a nearby building in 1970.
The building looks very nice due to the $120 million restoration and expansion that was completed last year. The building is much more accessible than most state capitols. There are no metal detectors or guards at any of the many entrances. You're free to just wander in and tour the building.
I spent a few hours at the capitol and then headed toward John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, which I'll visit tomorrow. On my way there I passed through the Malheur National Forest, home of the Humongous Fungus, an Armillaria solidipes fungus covering 3.4 square miles that is the largest single organism known. I would have stopped to see it but I didn't have any information on its location and I didn't see any signs.
I stopped in Mt. Vernon, OR for the night.
