I was woken up early by hikers. It's Saturday and summer weekends seem pretty busy on Borah Peak. The first group passed my tent at around 1:30am. By 5:00 there was a fairly steady stream of hikers heading up the mountain. I eventually got up, packed up my tent and headed down the mountain.

I drove to the Craters of the Moon National Monument in the Snake River Plain in central Idaho. The park protects a portion of one of the best preserved flood basalt areas in the U.S. along the Great Rift of Idaho.  This rift has erupted repeatedly during the last 15,000 years with the most recent eruption around 2,000 years ago.

I first went to the Visitor Center and watched the movies about the park. I then drove the loop road through the park. Having just hiked Borah Peak, I wasn't interested in doing much hiking.  Many of the parking areas were closed due to construction, which added to the length of some of the hikes.  I only did two of the shorter hikes.  It's a bizarre landscape.

I headed for Boise and found a room for the night.
