I left the Boundary Peak trailhead and drove to Lone Pine, CA to pick up my permit to climb Mt. Whitney and a bear-proof container for my food at the ranger station. I also spoke to a ranger about the current trail conditions. It doesn't sound encouraging. There's a lot of snow. I expected the trail to the campground to be snow-free but that's far from true.

People normally do the hike in either two or three days.  My permit allows me to take longer, if I want.  Depending on the snow conditions, instead of hiking all the way to the upper campground the first day, I may hike to the lower campground the first day, to the upper campground the second day and try for the summit the third day and then hike down on the fourth day.  From what I understand about the snow conditions and the expected weather, taking an extra day may improve my chances of summiting but I won't know for sure until I get on the trail and see for myself how it looks.
