I stayed up late last night talking to some people I met at the hotel.  My flu shot a few days ago is still making me sleep a lot.  The combination resulted in a late start today.  I fueled up in Whitehorse and headed down the ALCAN toward Dawson Creek, BC.  It was another lovely day.

I stopped at the Yukon Motel & Restaurant just to get out of the car and walk around.  I wandered into their gift shop.  They have an amazing display of stuffed animals, including some I didn't see in any of the museums I was in in Alaska, such as muskox, polar bear and golden eagle.  It was a pleasant surprise.

I stopped at the Rancheria Falls Recreation Site.  I hiked out to the Falls.  There are two parts to the Falls but neither of them were very impressive.

I stopped at the Visitor Center in Waston Lake.  I didn't want to stop for the day yet but there's a stretch coming up with some things to see and no good places to stay so it seemed like a good idea to stay here tonight.  The Visitor Center has a forest of signs - street signs, signs made to look like street signs, old license plates, signs people made up to hang there - all kinds of signs.  They claim there are over 70,000 signs.  The tradition goes back to when the ALCAN workers were in town.

The ALCAN has been much better than expected.  Nearly all of it, so far, has been paved and relatively smooth.  The drive tody took me past miles of forests of spruce, pine (many of which are dead or dying from the pine bark beetle), aspen and willow.  The willow and aspen are starting to get their fall colors in some areas.  I've been hearing weather reports that mentioned smoke from dozens of forest first in British Columbia.  This afternoon was the first time I've seen it.

I'm down to 39 hours 19 minutes and 2,399 miles to go to get to Telluride.  I'm disappointed in my progress today and it's unlikely I'm going to catch up tomorrow since I'll probably stop to see some things along the way but I'll still finish the ALCAN in less than the five days I read it took.  On the other hand, my estimate of three days to get from Dawson Creek to Telluride may be optimistic.
