My guides and I caught a float plane in the morning to Turquoise Lake in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. We set up camp on a spit at the west end of the lake. The weather was, again, unseasonably cold and wet. We went for a several hour hike west of the lake through the tundra. I've never walked across tundra before. It's very difficult to walk through. The area around the lake was a mixture of areas of rock, puddles and knee-high brush. The only trails out here are some faint animal trails. We haven't seen much wildlife yet; just birds and ground squirrels.
On Monday, 7/26/10 we hiked up the ridge south of the lake. The weather continued to be cold and wet. To get to the ridge we had to cross a stream. A very cold stream. I found out I suffer from Raynaud's disease (white spots on the skin in response to cold) in a couple spots on my right foot but I guess if it takes walking through water barely above freezing to trigger it, I don't need to be too concerned. We saw a little more wildlife today. We had three caribou spend some time checking us out.
We spent the night camped on the spit, again. We're going to move tomorrow.
