Since most of the things that I'd like to do in North Cascades National Park would take most of a day or longer and since many of the trails are still snow-covered and since I had a long drive ahead of me, I decided to skip the park and instead take care of some things such as laundry, buying a couple things and having them shipped to me in Alaska and doing some repairs. I didn't get that early of a start, but I made it to Cache Creek, British Columbia before looking for a hotel.
Finding a hotel was a problem. My TracFone won't work in Canada. I had to resort to stopping to check prices. I found something reasonable but they didn't have Internet. I tried my Verizon wireless service. When I started it up I got a message telling me that it could cost me up to $20.48 a megabyte. For comparison the $60 a month for the service gets me up to 5 gigabytes, which works out to 1.2 cents a megabyte. If I go over the 5 gigabytes they charge me 5 cents a megabyte, which is already a ripoff although it's a lot less than the 25 cents a megabyte they used to charge for excess usage. But $20? Are they nuts? If the service was working as well as they say it is capable of working, which I've never experienced, that would be over $10 a minute.
Tomorrow I'll continue driving toward Prince Rupert, BC.
