I checked out of my hotel in Dickinson and headed for the Theodore Roosevelt National Park's South Unit. My first stop was the Visitors' Center. Next to it is a cabin that Roosevelt lived in briefly. He had come out to North Dakota in 1883 to shoot a bison. He liked the area and wound up investing in a ranch and having the cabin built.
He returned to North Dakota the following year and lived in the cabin. He invested in another ranch and had a larger house built. The cattle business ran into hard times due to drought and blizzards a couple years later and Roosevelt got out of ranching. The larger house was torn down but the cabin went on tour around the country after Roosevelt became President. It was originally seven miles south from its current location next to the Visitors' Center.
I then drove around the loop road and did some hiking. The South Unit looks a lot like the North Unit but, as I suspected, it is a lot busier. They have re-introduced elk into the South Unit but I never spotted any. They also have feral horses, which I did see, and bison, which are hard to miss in the evening when they wander close to the roads to eat.
I left the park and headed toward Grand Teton National Park. I stopped in Billings, MT for the night.
