After the tour I spent a few hours catching up with Gerry and then headed for Las Vegas. I got to my hotel, the Tropicana, around 11:30pm but due to lines at check-in and the huge size of the resorts here it took until 1:00am to find my room and make two trips from the car to my room bringing in my bags.
This morning, Thursday, 5/20/10, I checked out what shows were available, picked a few and went to buy tickets
. I first went to Tix 4 Tonight, which is a misnomer since they sell tickets for the following day as well, and was able to buy four of the six tickets I was interested in at a heavy discount. Then I went to another ticket outlet and paid full price for two shows Saturday night. I might have been able to get them cheaper tomorrow but I decided to spend the extra instead of risking them selling out since they get their biggest crowds Saturday night. Then I needed to run around exchanging my vouchers for actual tickets. (I didn't quite finish - I still have one to go.) I took my car to the airport and turned it in and caught a taxi back to the hotel. For the rest of my time in Las Vegas it will be walking and taxis.
The two shows tonight are both at Planet Hollywood. At 7:30pm I'll see The Mentalist. Then at 10:00pm it's Marc Savard Comedy Hypnosis. I was conned to some extent on that show. The show used to be called Mesmerized, which I saw last year, but I didn't find that out until I already had the ticket. At least it was a good show. Well, I'm off to The Mentalist.
I checked out of my hotel and headed for Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school in Scottsdale, AZ. I met my friend, Gerry, from Phoenix there and we went on the 90-minute tour. The finish of the house is much rougher than the other Frank Lloyd Wright houses I've seen, partly to reflect the desert environment and partly for expediency since when he and his students first started building it they were living in tents in the desert.
