After spending a day investigating Labuanbajo (and believe me there's not much to investigate) we finally agreed on a tour to Komodo National Park. We hired a boat for two days to take us to Rinca and Komodo. So on the 12th we boarded the boat (which we were pretty impressed with) and headed for Rinca Island. It took about three hours to get to Rinca. We got off the boat and were wandering around taking pictures of the macaques when the guide pointed into the trees, it took a moment for us to cop on but there was a huge komodo just beside the path. We were delighted with ourselves and headed to the park office to get a guide. We opted for the 6km trek, which would take around two hours. We were really lucky with our guide, he was excellent and gave us plenty of information on the flora and fauna of the island. In total we saw between 15 and 20 dragons, loads of macaques and some water buffalo.
After the trek, it was back on board for some lunch and then we headed to red beach for snorkling. It was really beautiful, and the water was so clean and crystal clear. We spent the night at flying fox island. It was awesome, hundreds of flying foxes, the biggest I've ever seen. The next morning we went to komodo island. Most people say that Komodo is not as good as Rinca, but I gotta say we prefered it, there was far less tourists which was a major plus, also it was more difficult to see dragons, so when we did find one it meant a lot more than all the ones we saw on Rinca. We got another excellent guide, who took us on a trek, and we saw plenty of wildlife including Japanese deer, sulpher crested cockatoo's, a flying lizard and many different birds. We only saw one dragon on the trek but it was nice because we really had to look hard to find one, there were also a few big dragons around the camp which was a nice surprise once we had finished the trek.
