Venice - The City With Streets of Water!

Lisa's take on the city:
Venice was a very nice surprise. Cheryl had said we were "camping" again, so I expected another tent. But we had an awesome bungalow -- and it had AC!! :-) Camping isn't so bad after all!

We visited Venice, not exactly sure what to expect. I've seen pictures, but wasn't quite prepared for an island city that gets by entirely by boats on the canals. To go get pizza at night, run an errand around town, ambulance service, the policia, EVERYTHING travels by water. There are no cars and few mopeds or bikes, but LOTS of bridges over the canals. We had dinner on a fairly quiet canal, but were still able to see the gondoliers going by, families heading out and back to pick up a pizza, and many people with their dogs on the bows, happy to be out on the water. It was such a unique place and SO beautiful! The Piazzas and churches were elegant...but even church entrance was by water. The Grand Canal was an awesome site, also. We were going for a gondola ride, but the 100euro price for 25 minutes sent us to a great dinner instead. And of course, gelato for dessert! YUM!

From Cheryl:
To me Venice was a maze of waterways, bridges, and boats!  It was an unreal experience to see people using boats as their main transport.  When Lisa said pizza delivery, she meant it!   That was how the pizza places got their goods delivered..by boat!  As you walk around the town you do quickly notice that there are no sources of transportation in the little streets and alley.  No cars, motorbikes, or even bicycles.

Odd to see a city on the water!
