Catania (Sicily!)

From Lisa:

This was a fairly short stop as the boat had some "technical" problems en route and it was about 4 hours over-due for Sicily. We jumped off in time to take in some of the square -- amazing sculptures, cathedrals, and LOTS of shops. Also, very friendly people. We passed a group of Sicilian ladies sitting on their back steps and they treated us as though we were family with their welcoming smiles!

And there was Mt. Etna rising like a backdrop over the city. The largest active European volcano, it is definitely a presence to be felt in Catania. The sunset over the mountain and the wisps of smoke coming from the top made a great picture -- though I was hoping to see maybe a little of the red lava coming from the top as the sun went down -- but I'm sure those who live there are just as happy I didn't! :-)

It was a Tuesday afternoon when we visited and the city was full of weddings! We saw the cathedrals decorated with bouquets of flowers and iridescent balloons -- the balloons all let loose into the sky when the couples left the churches. The sky was filled with floating flowers and bells were chiming over and over. A great experience in a short time in Sicily.

From Cheryl:

Catania was a VERY quick stop.  To be honest, we went ashore to say we got to see Sicily!  After hearing about the tours some of our new found friends went on, we did not even come close to seeing Sicily!

For me the best part of Sicily was sitting on the back of the boat deck sipping on a glass of red wine watching the city turn into night with the jewels of lights from the small towns around Mt. Etna.  During the evening there were fireworks throughout the city that we also got a great view of.  We never found out exactly what the celebration was about, but it sure made it that much nicer of an evening!
