Two long days driving with Shin. We braved the two laners through Mexicali and Santa Ana. Made it through customs sweating bullets-- I was smuggling tobacco for my friend Randall. We found this nice parking space in a residential neighborhood. I slept in the back and Shin slept in the front seat. What a champion, that guy. Of course, I am giving him the chance to relive his glory days of ultralite, bohemian travel.
On Christmas morning I left it up to Shin whether to push on or to spend the morning in Mazatlán. 3 whole days in a car is brutal, the roads were longer and narrower than our map suggested. At any rate, the roads are whole lot better in Mexico now than 3 years ago when I was here last. True, they cost a whole hell of a lot more, almost 100 dollars in tolls from Tijuana to Guadalajara.
