Well here I am in France having left Switzerland on Sunday morning to travel north - just in time because the weather beginning to turn unpleasant. I didn't mention that the area that we stayed in Lauterbrunnen was very popular with people playing extreme sports . We watched base jumpers for quite a while - jumping off the mountain after first being dropped there by helicopter. They make a very strange sound as they hurtle towards the ground prior to opening the parachut then there is no sound at all. A bit spooky... Trummelbach Falls are the falls where the melting ice from the Eiger,Monch and Jungfrau leave the rock face. Not a good place to drop your favourite hat into....
After leaving this area we drove to Lausanne and visited the Castle de Chillon - now this is what I call a fortress. Built around the 11th - 12th century by a family called Savoyards. They were known as the gate keepers because they were able to control all transport and trade that passed from northern europe to the south via the Italian Alps. Yes, they were powerful.....and rich.......and looking at some of their weapons possibly rather mean......(have lots of pictures to take back home...)
The weather now beginning to pour so back to the car and off to Burgundy. We travel via Besancon - Dole - Beaune and try to keep clear of the larger towns, though we did (foolishly) go into Dole then found it almost impossible to get out again. The roads, go round and round in circles.
Beaune is a pretty town with a medieval centre surrounded by a huge ancient wall. We were lucky and were able to get accomodation in the old centre so the car was parked for the next few days and it was back to foot slogging again.
