Saturday 19th May 2012   Day of leisure

No need to worry about being ready for a certain time as we have the day to ourselves so are going to play tourists and take the tourist bus round the city.

The City of Merida was founded in 1542 by Spanish Conquistador Francisco de Montejo, he named it Merida because it reminded him of the ruined Roman city of the same name in Spain. It was an important city during the Spanish colonial rul and rose again in prominence at the turn of the 20th century when it became famous for rope-making from locally grown sisal. In 1900's Merida was said to have more millionaires per head of population than anywhere else in the world. This prosperity is reflected in the mansions we saw on our city tour.

The tour took 2 hours by the end it was really hot so went for lunch at Mr Banderas's  then back to the hotel for a sit round the pool and a cool swim. The clouds started to gather so I decided to come in then found the Chelsea v Bayern Munich game was on so Paul was soon back to watch. Glad they won.

Tonight will be another quiet one, out again tomorrow at 9am to go to  Celestun a nature reserve for a change. Will have to get some packing done tonight as we will be out all day tomorrow and off to Chichen Itza for one night then on to our last stop Tulum.

What a good day the time is now 6pm and so far no rain lets hope it lasts.
Repacked the bags as we will be out all day tomorrow, then checked the e-mails and had one from Adam and Polly telling us the name of their hotel and the fact that there was a street party nearby which started at 9pm.  As we will not get a chance to see them again we decided to walk down and try and meet up, but when we got to their hotel they were already out. Went into the square and had a drink, Merida looks totally different at night with all the buildings floodlit and music playing from all the bars.

After wandering around for a while we stopped to watch a wedding in the cathedral then walked round the square before starting back to our hotel. Then just as we crossed the road we saw them, and we all went for a drink and meal together. Well Adam and Polly had a meal we just had a snack as we’d eaten earlier. What an enjoyable time, we said we must keep in touch which will be great. It was such a pleasure meeting them both and everytime I see HSBC I will be reminded of them. (Adam works for HSBC based in Dubai)
