After a 17 hours bus ride (which was nowhere near as bad as I was anticipating - god love iPods and Inbetweeners and Big Bang Theory downloads!) I got to San Cristobal at about 9am.
San Cristobal is a fairly small colonial town which is now an indigenous Mayan centre. There really wasn´t much there if I am honest - market, Mayan sovenier market, and lots of coffee shops (San Cristobal also being a Mayan coffee centre).
The market was fabulous - a huge sprawling mass of stands selling all kinds of random stuff including live animals (some of the conditions were pretty bad such as live chickens being hung from their feet - almost made me go veggie again!) But overall, a really good thing to experience! Makes you wonder how people live on the (often) megre earnings they must make from selling old fruit or anorexic pigs.
Other than that, San Cristobal for me was about just relaxing, getting sleep patterns re-established, drinking coffee, wandering aimlessly, chain smoking etc - all in all, despite the lack of things to do and the appaulingly chilly temperatures, I left feeling happy, relaxed, and more fully into my travels. Roll on Mayan ruins, waterfalls, beaches and much more - the journey has begun!
