Where I stayed

There's only one way to describe Vegas and that's 'Fecking mental'. During the course of our stay, amongst other things we swam near sharks, ate lunch in Paris, partied in Times square and saw our friend jump from a 109 story building, but we'll get to that all  later.

We stayed at the Golden Nugget hotel located in the down town area of Vegas. For us lowly backpackers it was pretty darn flash, they even had a pool with a waterslide which ran through the middle of a shark filled aquarium, Ian and I ever the sophisticated adults went on it several times.  We spent the first evening wandering around in pursuit of a light and healthy dinner, which now looking back was a little naive of us. The thing about Vegas is that everything  is about excess; massive portions of food, great big canisters of drink and rather rotund people.

Vegas was absolutely baking hot, most days it reached 43 degrees, I have never felt heat like it. We both slapped on the factor 50 (!) although I now have the most unsightly tan lines in the perfect shape of a vest top. We spent most of our days weaving in and out of casinos in pursuit of much needed air conditioning. Most casinos were themed or had some kind of gimmick, our favorites included Venetian which had gondolas being rowed through a manufactured canal and Paris Paris complete with a fake Eiffel tower and winding French streets.  We did have a flutter, however we didn't win big, in fact we didn't win at all. To be entirely honest we didn't entirely understand most games and my pushing random buttons and  pretending to know what the hell I was doing wasn't the best strategy.  People-watching was far more interesting that the actual gambling, occasionally you would hear a massive 'whoop' or a 'god-damn', we spotted more than one fully dressed bride propped up by a slot machine and some twitchy security guards.

As most of you know I turned 29(b) whilst I was in Vegas. I woke up in the morning and was greeted with a DVD of lots of my friends sending birthday messages, what an absolutely amazing surprise.  Ian and I decided to go to an eat all you can (note the use of the word 'can' substituting the word 'want') buffet in the Bellagio Casino. One and a half hours of solid eating, a 'gluttonathon'  if you will.  After a quick cool off in the pool and a bit of a rest we hit the town drinking cocktails on the strip and partying in Times square in the Newyork, Newyork casino. A very fun if not messy night out. You really have not experienced a  bad hangover until you have one in 42 degree dry heat, in your thirties (gah).

The following day we met some good friends of ours Ben and Hollie, it was mad seeing them out of Cardiff and a bit surreal to all eat lunch in fake Paris. We hung out all day, perusing with our gambling, watching a gargantuan fake Elvis sing and to top the day off Ben decided to do a 109 story sky-jump on a zip wire from the top of a building.  We will see Ben and Holly again in San Fran before we all go to Burningman.

Vegas was great, but am glad to leave the brightlights and husstle bussle behind. Next stop San Fran.

Keep well, and for all of you who said put it all on black, pah loosers!

Sarah and Ian.
