Steve celebrated his birthday this year with a bacon sandwich and a trip to the Yehliu Geopark on Taiwan's northern coast, the jury's still out on which he enjoyed more!

So we managed to drag ourselves out of bed at a reasonable hour on a Sunday morning, Tania made the ultimate sacrifice as a vegetarian of cooking Steve a bacon sandwich (thankfully he prefers ketchup rather than brown sauce as HP is a little exotic around these parts) and we headed to the HSR (High Speed Rail) station to meet friends and be whisked up to Taipei. From there it was a more sedate bus ride for the final hour out to the northern coast and Yehliu Geopark.

The park is situated right on the coast and sports some weird and wonderful rock formations, the Queen's Head being the most famous. Quite how these formations were created became a little more obvious as the typhoon affected seas crashed about around us, producing some very welcome cooling spray from time to time, especially after we tackled the very hot and sweaty trek to the end of the headland, an excursion that left our group with a couple of casualties (frankly it was a little tame compared to the thrill of hiking up to Bergama in Turkey that Steve got to enjoy a couple of years ago on his birthday - must try harder next year!).

After several hours wandering around the impressive park and identifying dubious likenesses between rocks and various animals, clothes, people, household appliances... we headed back to Taipei to enjoy a traditional dinner at Kiwi Gourmet Burger followed by proper western cake (thank you Kelly!).

A lovely day and hopefully one of several Sunday outings to come as we attempt to see everything on our Taiwan wish list before our upcoming departure for pastures new!
