The gateway to Ephesus, Selcuk is a great little town with plenty to keep you occupied for a few days or more, especially if you have the most wonderful swimming pool hidden away in a mandarin orchard at your disposal.....

Ephesus is simply incredible, surely one of the most complete ruins this side of Pompeii. Fabulous mosaics, frescoes and the genuine feel that you are walking in an ancient city rather than just visiting a ruin.

Sadly the Temple of Artemis (a Wonder of the World) is faring slightly less well, only retaining one of its original 127 columns.

Surprisingly interesting is the local museum, what the Austrians forgot to pilfer is still very much worth seeing unless you are a contender for stroppiest English child of the year award, bellowing "THIS IS THE MOST BORING MUSEUM IN THE WORLD" at his parents constantly.... One statue in particular seemed to draw a lot of attention.....

Sirince, in the hills just outside Selcuk, qualifies as one of those stunning hill towns where you could very easily just kick back for a few days with the killer views and the perfumes emanating from the surrounding orchards.

In some ways, we left Selcuk with more questions than answers: Why did someone build a house between two aqueduct pillars? Why is our pension called the Kiwi when there is not a  Kiwi in sight? Which is the best flavour ice cream, walnut or black mulberry? and just what was going on between Mary and John the Baptist????? ;)
