Well my flight was delayed a bit so ended up sat around in departure lounge, thankfully i had anticipated such an event and taken a good book (Haruki Marikami's 'Dance, Dance, Dance').
It was just my luck that i ended up sitting with a load of dutch lads on the plane who had been to some football match, and wouldn't you know one of them had a serious wind problem... nuff said, that describes my flight!
Arriving in Amsterdam it all went smoothly, met roz and catherine in the baggage claim and we opted to just get a train to Leiden Centraal then a bus (#40) to Noordwijk where we were staying rather than the shuttle bus from the center of Amsterdam. This was really simple, everything ran on time and it was suprisingly cheap at about 4 euros for the train and 2.20 euros for the bus... why do we get public transport so wrong in the UK when the rest of europe have it nailed?!
The hostel we were staying in was the Flying Pig Beach Hostel, there was a little confusion over our booking as they said we didnt have one despite the fact i rang the day before to confirm (!?) and then they didnt have a key for the dorm that worked that they could give us... so much for things running smoothly... we put it down to the fact that they were all stoned and probably quite drunk as well. As we had walked into the hostel we were hit with a wall of hot air saturated with weed... great if you like that sort of thing but we had no intention of joining in on that side of things. Reminded me of uni actually, when living in halls the people around me used to smoke it all the time and  yself and my friend used to block the bottom of our doors when we went to bed so the smell didnt seep into the room through the night... goood times!
The dorm room was mixed but there seemed to be a natural divide, we met a few girls from the US, Canada and Germany, they all seemed nice enough and actually it was a good place if travelling alone, really easy to mix with other travellers. I'd reccommend ear plugs though, i was on the top bunk above hegs and the bar was right above me, the music went on into the night and trust me, even with ear plugs the bass penetrates!
