We landed in Christchurch to rain and very cold weather (under 10 degrees). The hire car was picked up and we then made our way to Diamond Harbour - about an hour out of Christchurch. We stayed with a friend of ours in a house built on a steep hillside overlooking the harbour.
During the night the house began to shake quite a lot. I was half asleep but Ruth was up trying to see what was happening. She told me to get up but I couldn't see what I could do and it was quite cold. The shaking went on for at least 2 minutes. After that there were a number of reasonable after shocks but we just stayed put waiting for the morning. We were really blessed that the house did not fall down the hill. Power went off so we were looking with the light of our phones. A little bit of a shaky start to our trip but we are grateful to be safe and sound.
We have been looking forward to catching up on sleep but that has not happened yet. We will make our way to Lake Tekapo tomorrow.

Thank goodness you guys are ok. I should have gotten your itinerary before you left. Doug asked where you were flying into. Wow!!!! It can only get better from here.
